About

Music between Synthpop and Trip-Hop

Blu Hustle creates music that oscillates between the genres of Trip-Hop, Synthpop and EDM.
The lyrics do not intend to convey a coherent narrative. More so the music aims at painting atmospheric, sonic images that reverberate in the imagination of the listeners.

By utilizing electronic music equipment such as synthesizers and digital drum pads and blending them with old-school hip-hop beats a unique aesthetic is being created. The sound can be compared vaguely to urban artists such as Massive Attack, Apparat or Rhi.

All music is recorded and produced by Gunther Schumann.

Artistic Vision

The music deals with experiences of alienation in modern life and urban spaces. In the future, an audio-visual performance will be realized that fuses video and audio content. The goal is, to create an immersive experience for the audience that transcends the definitions of visual arts and entertainment.

Since this future project is very complex I am currently looking for artistic project partners with the focus on camera, dance/performance and production design. If you feel compelled to work with me on this project please do not hesitate to contact me.

Latest Album and Artistic Video

The debut album Changing Tides“ was first published in November 2020 and deals with subjects of emotional intensity in romantic relationships.

The latest album is titled “Rain City“ and will be released in the middle of 2021. It addresses the conflict: individual vs. urban space.

Right now, a music video for "Rain City“ is in production.

Urban Dance Video

When dance meets architecture, two fundamentally different worlds collide: one made of angles, logic, concrete, and permanence; the other defined by transience, transformation, flowing fabrics, vulnerable skin, and the ephemeral.

We staged the column garden of the SAB premises as an abstract forest, with the dancer Resi Gappel as its inhabitant. Her movements oscillate between searching and finding, hiding and revealing, drowning and awakening.
To find the right time frame for the shoot, I spent several consecutive evenings at this location during the blue hour. The intention was to let the space speak for itself and to convey the narrative not through words, but through music, atmosphere, and moments of movement.
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the dancer Resi Gappel, my film crew, SAB – Sächsische Aufbaubank, and the Werkleitz Gesellschaft, who made this video possible despite the lack of financial support from various institutions.

When UUUUUUUU Sleep

Urban Animation Video: When uuuuuuuu Sleep

What happens on the streets at night when most people are asleep? Using the artistic techniques of mobile projection mapping and digital 2D animation, the visual artist Gunther Schumann designs a living world of lights that moves in a border area between fiction and reality. The artist is primarily concerned with playfully including urban architecture in his compositions and restaging them. Apparently inconspicuous places in the public space of Halle (Saale) and Leipzig are deliberately selected. These are often non-places that otherwise hardly invite you to look and linger. The result is a four-minute black and white short film. Filmed with a smartphone it doesn't intend to tell a self-contained storyline. Rather, it's a loose collage of animated fragments that convey an eerily beautiful atmosphere of the night's happenings.

The music of "Blu Hustle" accompanies this film and underlines its atmosphere. However, this is not a classic music video, since neither the singer nor other musical references are visually present. In the broadest sense, it could therefore be compared to a silent film in which the audio and video tracks are directly related to one another, but act independently of one another.

This project was created as part of a working grant from the Saxony-Anhalt Art Foundation over a period of one year.
